<br>The race -- dubbed "marathon" after the messenger's place to begin -- was practically 25 miles (40.2 kilometers) lengthy. Enthused race supporters known as it the final word homage to the historic Greeks, whose minds had conceived of the Olympics. But detractors argued that the race was unsafe: The weather would be too sizzling and the distance far too long for man to survive it. Nonetheless, the marathon remained on the itinerary -- and the Greeks have been favored to win. Their marathon crew was carefully chosen by way of trial races over the marathon course.
